engage 17:23 is a blog set up for use by the Santa Ana District of the California-Pacific Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church (wow… that was long!) and beyond.  Based on the verse in Acts 17:23, where Paul is seen engaging the people of Athens in spiritual conversation, our hope is that this blog will encourage the same for all who visit, use it, mock it or love it.

I just returned from a week long seminar at the center for contemplation and social action in albuquerque new mexico…the seminar on the Emerging Church…..with over 1000 people there… it was noted that the participants were from over 40 different denominations….evenly divided between over 35 and under 35….the speakers Shane Claiborne, Brain Mcclaren and Phyllis Tickle…..I was delighted to see the Emerging Church isn’t about denomination heritage or age limitations….very inclusive…Phyllis’s book Emergence Church was featured of course and her historical survey of 500 year patterns of emergence and then encrustation and then decay was very helpful….as she said the church needs to have a rummage sale every 500 years or so…..I especailly liked the analogy of the church in Antioch vrs the church in Jersualem…as the new paradigm for today…..

I heard that message from Phyllis at National Youth Workers Convention in Sacramento. It was very enlightening…
